| Daniel Timofte: Clearly still very upset about it |
In 1990 a man from Romania stood up to take a penalty against an Irish football team who refused to be defeated in their first ever World Cup in Italy! The same man rather than hammering it into the corner lofted a floaty shot about a meter to the right of our goalkeeper setting up an easy save and a passage way to the World Cup quarter final in Rome against the host nation the following Saturday! As the whole country proceeded to go crazy this man was seen pulling his hair out in despair! That man's name is Daniel Timofte, the first man ever to miss a penalty and by the looks of things neither he nor his hairline ever fully recovered. Being forearmed with this information would have secured you a precious point in Tuesday nights Dental Outreach Christmas Table Quiz that took place at The Star and raised a whopping 590 euro. Sadly, despite the fact that a significant proportion of those who turned out were likely to have been conceived on the back of this historic event 21 years ago, not many people got the question right! A large and lively turn out, a steady flow of beer, free pizza and questions quizzing all over the place made for a very entertaining evening that seemlessly followed the planning guidelines charted by logistical stalwart Lucy Dollar Walsh! Michelle Fung kept a cool head as she assisted with the math while the walking calculator Kaelan O' Shea came close to overheating a few times during the number crunching process of tallying up the scores. Doozers Orna, Aine, Aoife and Emily swarmed the floor collecting answer sheets before passing them over to Michelle Ive-got-all-the-answers McSweeney (who was hiding out in a nearby bunker) for correction. Niamh, Gafwyn, Ian, Mev-J and thirsty Mpho made up the numbers for other teams which entailed having the lols and getting blotto for a good cause! The winners, Griffindor were Simon, Brendan, Orla and Joe who overcame challengers The Woos and Hashtag Reacharound for first place! Best Team Name went to 'Lets get Quizical' while the worst team name unofficially went to 'The Quizmaster touches Himself!' as it was in very bad taste and it may not actually be true!
